Field Day is many things to an amateur radio operator. Foremost, it is a time for us to test our emergency communications capabilities. Quite often, Field Day operations are set up in sites where no commercial power is available and electric power is provided by solar, wind, or generator. Additionally, antennas must be raised on these sites. The test for hams is to come into an area not normally used for amateur radio and set up a working station to provide emergency radio communications. It is also a contest, and each Field Day site is trying to reach as many other Field Day stations within usually a 24 hour period. Each contact made is worth so many points and we compete against other sites with the same number of working stations. Field Day is also a social time. Each Field Day site provides food and beverages for it's crew. Usually, each site has a "chef" who is a whiz at cooking. grilling, and/or barbequing. After all, we need to eat well! Pictures and information about the various Field Day operations our club has had are featured on the right hand side. . |
